Me and my girlfriend are getting married! Now while other brides are worrying about finding the perfect dress and perhaps the perfect champagne we've got bigger fish to fry... what is the perfect beer to celebrate a marriage?
Two brides with a taste for the finer beers in life require a beer of the highest quality to celebrate their big day. And to complicate matters it's got to serve a mix of people with broad tastes, some of which even include fosters....
Roggenbier by Green Duck Brewery
Our search started when we stumbled across the Green Duck stand at last years Birmingham Camra festival. My girlfriend (Liz) was looking for a German style wheat beer, not always the easiest to find at festivals like this but in Green Duck we struck lucky. Although Roggenbier is not a wheat beer, it is traditionally made with 60% rye malt, it has many similar qualities. Most importantly the banana and orange tones. Added to this was a sour, yeastiness I have only tasted before in a few croatian craft beers I have never seen in this country, although they had a distinctly funky smell that this was gladly missing. And it was vegan. Another plus for our veggie (and some vegan) wedding.
We were bowled over. I was basically asking them to make me a keg up there and then. However, in the haze of our hangovers we realised that this distinct and unusual flavour, although refreshing to us hardened ale drinkers, may leave the two of us drinking the whole keg.
So the search continues...
